  • El Gusto indeed!

We occasioned by El Gusto del Pueblo the other night. It had been a while since we'd dined at El Gusto, and because it was late evening we ordered fajita nachos. They were really tasty, nachos like they should be made, with fresh ingredients and prepared carefully, not just everything poured over the tostadas like in some places. I was impressed
  • Great Dinner at Gaido's--as usual!

We had a fabulous dinner at Gaido’s last week. They have consistently fresh fish and prepare it so well. Plus there’s the shrimp bisque (yummm!), great salads and sides, excellent steaks, delicious desserts, and on and on. I’m looking forward to January, when I always have my oyster platter. This time I had a steak which was delicious
  • Epicurean Evening a Blast

I hope you got to the recent Epicurean Evening at Moody Gardens. I went with some friends and we had a fabulous time. Dozens of local restaurants were there with samples of their very best items, wine and beer purveyors poured generously, a free photo booth allowed us to clown around and take home a souvenir, and there was even a silent auction. The
  • Casey's great for families

We went out to Casey's on Seawall on a recent Monday evening (they're open seven days now). The atmosphere is casual and friendly, and the food is nicely prepared. My friend had a grilled seafood platter that had wonderful Gulf shrimp, and redfish. I had a NY strip sirloin that was generous in size and good for the price. Both came with great
  • Takeout Home Cooking

Have you tried Chopin Mon Ami for lunch or dinner? They have wonderful comfort food. On several occasions I have felt not at all like preparing food, and was able to have meals better than Mom used to make. They prepare one selection per day so I don't even have to make a choice! And they have dessert as well. I've tried several of the entrees
  • Breakfast at Star Drug

We have friends in town for Mardi Gras, so we all went out to Star Drug for a late breakfast. They have done a fantastic job refurbishing the place post-Ike (take a look at the water line and you'll be amazed!), and the food is as fine as ever. I had the "Islander" Omelette, with cheese, bell pepper, onion and tomato. I substituted one
  • Fabulous dinner at Willie G's

If you have not been to Willie G's since it reopened, you must get there! We went on a weekday night (I believe reservations are recommended on the weekend) and loved it. All the way from appetizer to dessert, we were impressed with the delicious food preparation and the attention to the visual presentation of their offerings. The decor is beautifully
  • eat cetera is back, hooray!

I've had two opportunities to lunch at eat cetera in the last couple of weeks. The first time I had a special panini with cambezola (camembert + gorgonzola, a real treat), ham and grilled asparagus. This week I shared lunch with a friend: we each had a cup of of corn soup with chipotle sauce, and shared a kobe roast beef panini with mushrooms and
  • Dinner from Shrimp & Stuff

Shrimp & Stuff is indeed back in operation. We live nearby so we called in an order and it was ready in 10 minutes. I had a great shrimp salad, big fresh shrimp in a creamy mix with chopped shrimp, served over lettuce with avocado, half-boiled-egg, and tomato. So great to have a healthy salad! My companion enjoyed his shrimp poor boy. I am so in
  • Had Lunch at The Spot today

We went with some friends over to The Spot on Seawall around 12:30 this afternoon. We arrived just before the line elongated so we didn't wait at all. They have a limited menu right now but it included what I wanted, a Spotburger! It was just the comfort food I needed. The place was pretty well packed but we found a quiet table. My friend had a
