Well.... I've been extremely busy of late so I delayed joining to put myself in "Forum Rehab" for a time. Thought it would be a good time to do it with the switch and all. I still have a ton of things to get done. I've got to re-write some programs at work, I've been contacted for some webmastering duties from two clients, I've got some muzak projects that have been sitting on the back-burner that need attention. However, I've managed to shoot a bunch of stuff at Shangri La in Orange, TX. I also finally got a few selectd photos together for Volume I of a "coffee table" like book to be printed at lulu.com, something I have been meaning to do for awhile now. Still need to get next volumes together.... and.... and.... and.....

"They"  are saying for us to post our pictures to MEDIA, but I can't figure out how to start a new thread. I have some old pictures.of Galveston but I don't think it was supposed to be on one long thread.

I have far too many to do that.... plus it's double work for me. I load most of my stuff to my own site.

Well, I guess you can just put your url up to your site.  thats what lurker does.  But I don't have but a few old black and whites.  I'm not going to go to the trouble to mix them in together with all the others.  I will just put them on my home page.

You have some awfully good pictures, I look forward to seeing them soon.

Glad you showed up, Drew.  After reading your to do list, I'm wore out, though.  I have one item per day on my list, and that stresses me sometimes. Look forward to seeing more of your great pics.

old dawg.......did you see my reply to drewk?  I am trying to find out why I can't start a new thread on the media site.  it is not good for all of the pictures to be on the same thread.  it makes too many to look at in a row.  it should be in different threads, like this

all it has in media and then misc Galveston photos, and Galveston Pod-cast.

I just posted some of my old black and whites on my home page.  I thought we were supposed to use media for posting pictures.  I would like to post them there, but I think something is missing.  Of course it may be my brain is missing, in that case, what else is new.

Embarrassed I am so embarrassedEmbarrassed Surely I did not actually write a message and post it here for everyone to see??? I was haveing a hard time trying to get my pictures downloaded/uploaded.  I saw that you were online old dawg, but I couldn't find you.  I surely did not mean to sound snippy.  Maybe it is time for me to have another selfimposed recess for that much needed timeout in the corner.

    Virginia:

p.s. old dawg. why didn't you answer my direct conversation.  ?

Big Smile Well, scuse me, Virginia! Surprising as it may seem, I don't sit right here on line every minute of the day.  It only seems that way to folks. Big Smile

I just did answer your direct conversation.

My answeer was that I don't know.  And your question was, why can't we start a thread in the media section?

I don't think it was intended to be used the way we would have preferred to use it, so in it's present form, it isn't gonna fit me too good.  The organization is pre-set, wth no way to modify it, and there is no way to start a thread.  So, it's merely a repository for pictures that display the attributes of Galveston, organized in a way that visitors to the forum can browse around and get a feel for the beauty of Galveston.  It's great for that, and I applaud the concept.

But, it really ain't the place for our personal snapshots, or for pictures of anything not connected with Galveston Island.  So, that's what I suppose we should limit ourselves to when if we use the media section.

So, I think if we want to share snapshots and pictures of our grandbabies or our trips to Disneyland or wherever, we just need to link to our own external servers where we keep our own scrapbooks.  I believe that in it's current form, the media section is the wrong pew for our scrapbooks and personal slideshows.

That's not a bad idea, BR.

The free account permits 10, 000 images, give or take, so that could hold us for a while. And it could be organized free form, or separate directories for each user, or however we chose. No limits to size, no restrictions on downloads, and you can even link to a given picture in a post like this.  I think if the proper size is chosen when the file is uploaded, it would display fine in this window too, if we chose to do that.

    www.photobucket.com

    Username = galvestonisland

    password = galveston

We might have to let you hang around here for a while, sir. Big Smile

And here ya go. Medium size chosen when uploaded to make it fit this window for a demo..  .

And, of course, you can just log on to the photobucket account and upload or download, or browse, or make a directory and put stuff in it. Or, even delete something you don't like, regardless of who put it up there.

Not sure what happens if several people were to log on at one time and started revising stuff.  Wont it lock the account against multiple instances?

That's Dixie and Vic, in case anybody doesn't recognize our gal.

I hear you.  BR's idea is just for a rough substitute for a forum spot to upload whatever us kids want to upload with no limitation on size or how ithings are organized.  Of course, everybody could have their own photobucket account (I have an account there myself, the free one just like the account that BR set up for the group to use), so it's a pretty flexible way to share pictures, for free, and with no impact on storage space on the forum server at all.

I don't plan on uploading much to it either. Just local stuff of the group, or things like that.  That seems to be a feature that some of us old folks with brownie box cameras and print album backgrounds want. Like here's a shot of my great uncle Burt just before we commited him, and stuff like that. Big Smile

    PS:

    That was a fun day!

I don't have many pictures on the Photobucket servers.  All of my photos are stored on my four computers and back up external hard drives. I just uploaded that one to the account that BR set up for anybody to use just to show how it works.  I do have my own photobucket account, but nothing much that I have is worth the trouble of uploading to it.  I did upload the pictures we took on the trip to West Texas earlier thsi month, because I think they might be worth sharing.  Just haven't posted any links to them here, yet.   Kinda waiting till the smoke settles on this new thing we have here. Big Smile

Yes, it was a fun day. Day after Christmas I think.  I'll upload all the shots I have of that little party to this new shared Photobucket account.  I'll increase the size and resolution some from the shot of Dixie and Vic that I just posted the link to.  Anybody who wants to may download them.

How about if he did it like this?

Except that I didn't resize it properly. Need to play around with it some, I guess. The 35mm aspect ratio is too wide for this window unless you reduce the size of the image quite a bit. Cropping and resizing will take care of a lot of shots, but wide scenic shots won't work so good as direct views within a post.

Guess we wil have to get used to just going to the site where the poster has stored his pictures to share with us.

Are you sizing it to message board size. I'm at work and can't access photobucket but seems like there are 4 size choices. I'll try to post later this evening from photobucket (If I can remember, my mind is fried from being the last few days of school!Stick out tongue)

I hadn't tried message board size, although I figured it might be better, just like you did it here, but on my display, it still cuts off part of the right side of the picture.  I wanted it to show that whole shot from left to right, including the Starlight, but the only way I could get it to display full width was to reduce it to the size of the shot of Dixie and Vic.  And that's kinda teeny for a scenic shot.  Problem is that this window is just not wide enough to do what you want to do with scenic stuff.

Oddly enough, it displays wide enough in the edit mode here.  But, that's just the way it looks to me, and you guys can't see it.  Anyway, the way we would have to do it would be to change the aspect ratio of the pictures so that they were more like the 35mm aspect ratio turned vertically. Or just crop the pictures to a square format like the old 620 format of bygone ages.  It can ge done, but it just takes some cropping and editing to make it work right.

Notice that pictures aren't truncated vertically, they are just cut off horizontally to fit in this window.

    Dixie:

how how how do you put up a pic like that??????

Well, the short answer is that you upload the pictures to the external servers, like Photobucket and many others, and then link to those shots from within this forum.

The long answer is a bit more involved, but not much.  Are you asking where to upload them, and how? Or are you asking how to link to them?
