  • What am I hungry for???
    06-17-2009 7:49 PM

    Ok gang,

    First, hello to all.

I do hope everyone is getting back to some kind of normal after Ike.

We will be on the Island mid August and I am looking for some of the best places to sit down and chow. I have a few places on my list already but I am always looking for information on a great place to eat. I love just about any kind of good food.

A great burger will out do a medi-oker fine dinning any day but. I'm in on a fine dinning if it's worth the doe!!!

Let me here some of the really good places to eat and the type of food they serve. Please!!!

    David

When I get there I'll be there!!!

Well, David, like they say, one man's meat is another man's poison, and since I ain't too choosy when it comes to the culinary arts (if it ain't moving or acting like it's gonna bite back, that's good enough for me) I'll leave the dining recommendations to the more discriminating among us.

But, I do want to welcome you to the forum.  Hope you will enjoy the island.

    Well Old Dawg,

Thanks for the welcome and I will make sure we enjoy the Island.

Even if you don't consider your self a culinary arts major, where have you eaten your best meal??? I'm open to any thoughts.

For what it's worth, my own personal favorites, not necessarily in any order:

    Seafood: Clary's, Willie G's, Fisherman's Wharf

    Greek: Olympia Grill

    Mexican: The Original Mexican Cafe

American, etc: Sunflower Bakery, Mosquito Cafe.

    Burgers: The Spot

But, without a doubt, there are those who won't agree, and there are those who will recommend the more traditional favorites.

There are many, many good places to eat on the island, so it's really hard for me to say where I've had my best meal. Best way to find out is just to do your own personal hands on research.  I'm still doing my own research, even after all these years of chowing down.  Fattening, but fun.  Stick out tongue

Come to think of it, I had some great fish tacos today at Willie G's.   Best meal I've had today.  Of course, tomorrow is another day.  Big Smile

Seafood:Casey's is decent, mid-priced and not too fancy, Gaido's is Casey's with attitude, more glitz and Glamour, higher price.

Mexican: Our family is split between The Original and Salsa's (I personally like Salsa's)

Breakfast: The Sunflower, though there's a little hole in wall near The Commodore called the Kettle or I think it is actually The Dutch Kettle, great food, great price, nice people, it's a dive to look at...

    Where are you staying?

Anything on the Press Box menu is worthwhile, only drawback is if you are a non-smoker you will walk out of there smelling like you have smoked about 5 packs of Camels. The Spot for Burgers and great Gulf Views. If you want great Greek food you won't find any better then either Olympia location. The Harborside location has an awesome deck with a harbor view. Seafood, if you are buying Gaido's, or Clarey's if I am picking up the check Shrimp & Stuff, Caseys, or the Gumbo Bar, if you have the corporate card Rudy and Paco's,  for Italian Luigi's, Mexican "The Original" or Salsa's, if you want healthy Mosquito Cafe. I have missed a bunch as there is no shortage of great places to eat on the Island. If you want to do it yourself buy some fresh seafood at Katie's.

Everything that happens will happen today.

Maybe we could help by naming some places we WON'T eat at (again).

    Here's mine: Tortuga.

I wish there was even ONE good thing I could say about this place, but our experience was horrible, service, food, price-you name it.

I have to agree that Tortuga has deteriorated in recent years, because our last time there wasn't so great either.  However, what this kinda demonstrates is that it's certainly not a good idea to recommend a place (or vice versa for that matter) based on anything other than very recent experiences.  Up until our more recent disappointment with Tortuga (by recent I mean about 3 years ago), I would have disagreed with you, Robin.  I remember with pleasure a 4th of July evening about ten years ago, sitting out on the porch of Tortuga, eating and drinking and watching the fireworks display from a distance.  The service was great, the food was good, the beer was cold, and I enjoyed myself very much.

Just shows to go that things never stay the same.  That's a good thing.  That's a bad thing.

    Take your pick.

You're right Dawg, it was two years ago (or almost) for us, things may have changed and when I add my two cents it is always just "one man's opinion" or in this case, 3 women and 2 men...

Yeah, I hear ya.  Same here.  I haven't been back to Tortuga in a while, for the same reason that you haven't, but who knows.....maybe it's changed for the better.  One can only hope.

Don't you worry about any opinions given here.

I know just how things go. I have eaten at places that I know have great service and food and have a bad experience. It happens.

I would like to here from you all on the places you would not eat though.

I remember one time we went on a day trip and we stopped at a place that looked to be a real nice little place to have lunch and boy was I shocked. It reminded me of a lunch I had at school once. Ick!

Island cat had mentioned Shrimp stop, it was really a nice overall experience last time I hit (at least a year ago), but I heard that the owner had either shut the place down or sold out to someone else.  Is it still the same?

I got to recommend getting a hamburger and basket of onion rings from "The Spot"!!!

    Hi David,

I see you are from Corpus (kiss the sand for me) and you must know your seafood. If you like funky places with live music and to sit outside, try Boudreaux's on the Bayou. They have fresh shrimp and all the baskets kind of meals.

Burgers: Spot and Fishtales (the latter has shrimp kisses which are to die for).

    Mexican: The Original

Seafood: Gaidos, Willie G, Fisherman's warf, Casey's, Shrimp and Stuff

Breakfast and any other time: Sunflower

Healthy: Mosquito Cafe, their chicken salad is outstanding

I hope your Galveston Island time is a good one. Please post afterwards to let us know how it all went.

You are unique just like everyone else. Hmm

What is a good place to eat that has an outside deck with a view of the Gulf? Would also like it to be very casual and of course have ice cold beer.

Will be taking my wife down there on Saturday for her birthday.  We will probably hit the beach for a while then eat before heading back to La Porte.
