Sandpiper Motel - Any news on it's status?

Does anyone know what is or will happen to the Sandpiper Motel? I have not seen any New news articles or any new pics lately? Just wondering if it will be demolished or fixed back up again? Most of my trips to the island....my family stayed there & enjoyed the private balcony with the great view of the beach. Sure hope someone has news for me. Thanks.

Where to stay with dogs?

My wife and I stayed in galveston last year for our anniversary and had our dogs with us. We chose the Reef Resort because they were amazinly pet friendly and allowed our full grown great dane, pug, and a great dane puppy to stay. The staff was very nice and loved the dogs so much my dane puppy ended up with a pic. on their bulletin board. They made us promise to come back to see how much he grew. Well its time to head back to galveston and from all I can figure out The Reef Resort has not reopened since Ike. Now I can't seem to find anywhere that will accept all of our dogs. We now have two large great danes and a pug. The main reason we go to the beach is because the dogs love it and my oldest great dane (10) is quite possibly on his last summer. Does anyone know where we could find a room for this herd? Thanks much!

Ok everybody hubby and kid and I are planning a trip to Galveston and we read the reviews for Comfort on 6302 Seawall and they weren't good. We weren't sure where to stay. Can anybody give me some opinions or suggestions on Comfort Inn or the Inn at the Waterpark or Beachcomber some help please

Well, here's the long-awaited review of La Qunita on 14th street. First and foremost, our overall stay here was without a doubt very pleasant, due largely to the awesome staff! I would recommend this hotel to friends in a heartbeat. The staff from the parking-lot cleaning porter to the managers on duty went above and beyond to smile, say hello and just be polite in general. The house-keeping staff were always laughing, asking how we were, etc. It's no secret we had car issues this last visit, and had to stay an extra day and had a very late check out. This was arranged by staff without any issue whatsoever and they even adjusted our overall rate so we didn't end up paying an arm and leg for that extra time. After I made my reservations I had read reviews on several different websites, they were not good reviews. Honestly I do not know what happened to those poor travelers but they should give it another shot. The newly renovated rooms are bright, comfortbale, larger then most and were spotless. There were a few minor disappointments. The breakfast was very limited, bagels, two kinds of cereal, plain oatmeal (we found no milk the first two mornings) and make 'em yourself waffles, which were very good. Coffee, tea and orange juice. It says the breakfast bar is open 7-10, however this is only on the weekends, it closes at 9:00 during the week and when we arrive (literally) at 9:05 (thinking we had til 10:00) it was packed up. All that said, we didn't come to the beach for breakfast and it does have a Denny's in the parking lot, so.... Not a huge problem. On the irritating side was the room lock/cards that had to be "re-magnitized" EVERY TIME you wanted to get back into the room. The hotel was well-aware of this problem and was working on it. The beach by the hotel is nothing but rocks, and that's during low tide, after high tide there was seaweed hanging off the rails 4 steps up the access port. A VERY short walk west will give some sand and beach area. The hotel is advertised as near Stewart beach, it isn't, no hotels are since the sandpiper hasn't re-opened.

All and all a very nice experience and a quite a bargain for travelers cost-wise, nice large family pool and friendly, friendly, friendly!

hotel within walking distance to The Spot

We have resv for the Commodore during the Lonestar Rally. I'm interested if there are any other hotels within walking distance to the Spot and also the distance for the Commodore as well. I am unsure about staying there as the reviews aren't too great about it. Thanks

Commodore Verses Gaido's

We had a lovely time at the Commodore this weekend, the pool is great, the view is great, the room was bright and comfortable. The traffic noise kept us all up 1/2 the night and the attempted murder or whatever was happening in the room next to us Saturday night was a little unnerving (Could happen at ANY hotel though, and the Sherrif took care of it BEFORE the women was thrown from the balcony). We were on the 4th floor, the elevator is the size of a shoe box and slower then molasses. I personally did not mind taking the stairs except for luggage-lugging times... The staff was very helpful and pleasant as they come! The breakfast was adequate and the "dinning area" very roomy! Well location, can't be beat, it is the SAME as Gaido's.

So, what's the verdict? We'll be staying at Gaido's next time (assumming availablity), family pointed out: rooms are same size, side view rooms are MUCH quieter, the observation deck is great for people watching, movie viewing and "pausing" in general, the pool is very nice and it is about $40-$50 cheaper a night. I got a smart family.

Still, anybody looking would be very happy at either hotel, so long as they are looking for comfort, value and location and not the Ritz

Anybody got a current opinion on how Gaidos is doing? I have been checking some other travel sites and Gaidos has been trashed in reviews since IKE. Comments vary from "paint it", to "Why is it open if there's been no maintenence?", etc. Repeat travelers seeme especialy distressed over the conditions.

We just booked a room at the Commodore Hotel for the end of April 2009. I am seeing lots of dump trucks moving sand around on the beach. I hope all that is done by the time we get there. Keep me posted on any news. I will check back on here periodically. Our last trip to the Quality Inn was about a year ago. I guess the message board has been cleared since then cuz I didn't see any of the prior messages about that. Is there anything new or different in the area?

Smoking Policy @ The Commodore ...??

OK So I read The Commodore is now a non smoking hotel. Im undertsnading it to be the entire property but what is the entire property to them ..?? The rooms and balcony and outside areas or all of the above plus the parking lot or all of the above plus the parkinglot plus the sidewalk ?? Whats the policy on this ?? I have a friend who smokes and if he can stand on the sidewalk outside thats fine but if they will harass him over it forget it I love the hotel but were only gonna be there one night and I dont want him to have a bad time the one night hes there Im gonna try to turn him into an IBC with me, LoL.

Flagship hotel

Has anyone heard anything about the Flagship hotel? Last year their site said they would be up and going the first of the year. I know there was some kind of problem with the previous and new owners.

I love that hotel. It has been a family favorite of ours for years. I hate to see it sitting there wasting away.

Hi all, I was going thru old photos from the 80s and I found a pic of me and my Mom at the Olympic sized pool at the Seahorse Inn I believe it was called. It was on the Seawall. Does that motel still exist? ANd if not, what is there now?

The hotels are too good in Canada,and the management of the hotel is also too nice .The look of the hotel is very nice and it has swiming pool and the gardens .The hotel is of luxrious type,the hotel is for which the family or couple come on holidays to enjoy the moments.

Stayed there for the first time Thursday night. Got a ocean view room ($72.00) with a $10.00 tax added on. The room was very clean, nice view. My one complaint is that the beds are way too hard. This is my first experience to stay across the street from the water..I usually stay on the beach where I can walk out onto the beach. This bothered me plus the sound of the traffic interferred with listening to the waves. On the positive side, I was able to park right below our room and Casey's restaurant is attached to the motel. The staff is very professional. Their coffee is good, too for the continental breakfast.They did have the $49 rooms that are in the back with no view but what a heck of a deal! Their rates do go up after the 26th they told me. All and all, I think this is one of the most affordably clean and centrally located motels in Galveston. Easy to get across the street to the seawall and has an outstanding restaurant to boot! Oh, yeah..had that fried brie.
