I finally made it down to Saengerfest Park for the last of the free movies of the season. They were showing "Cool Hand Luke" Great movie, and perfect weather. Kicked back with a couple of cold ones. Very enjoyable. Can't wait till they start next March.

THURSDAY OCT. 22nd.- The Hudsons final gig at the OQAC! Don't miss this show. I know many of you are bummed out about the break up, so come out and catch them for their last show!!

I have been a fan of this band(2 guys on guitar sometimes joined by a female fiddle/violin player) for about 5 years. I have seen them a bunch of times at “The Quarter” and also attended a benefit for Rex that they put on at Anderson Fair in Houston last winter. If we are lucky they will end the show with their song about Rex and the “Starbock” affair.

I see on Twitter that the Galveston Restaurant Group is doing a fireworks display on 9/12 @ 2130 at 29th/Seawall that is planned to be "larger and longer" (shut up Dixie) than the show on the Fourth. Sounds like fun!

Meteor showers will light up Tuesday night sky

Earth | Up in the sky – is it a bird? Is it a plane? A UFO? At this time of the year, at night, it’s very likely the Perseid meteor shower.

The annual meteor display – which comes about this time every summer – will reach its visible peak late Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning, said Alan Hilburn of the Cape Fear Astronomical Society in Wilmington.

Some astronomers have predicted that sky-gazers might see as many as 80 meteors an hour, although the moon – which will be slightly more than half-full Tuesday night – might interfere with the viewing.

Observed for more than 2,000 years, the Perseids are among the brightest and best known of the meteor showers that streak across the sky during the year. They take their name because the meteors will seem to zip from a point in the constellation Perseus, although they could appear anyplace in the sky.

Perseid meteors are bits of debris left over from the tail of Comet Swift-Tuttle; the Earth passes through their trail at this time each year. Astronomers expect some of this year’s meteors to be especially bright, Hilburn said, and patient observers might even see a few fireballs.

For best meteor-watching results, NASA suggests finding a spot well away from street lights. Bring a comfortable chair or a blanket to lie back upon, along with some bug spray, drinks and snacks. Try to avoid staring at the moon, which will be bright enough to interfere with your night vision; then you might miss some meteors.
