OK, here it is. I had an opportunity to hang out with my mom, her boyfriend and the Saint of all Saints my Grandmother. Grandma says let’s go to Chili’s. They have a little special going on where you spend 20 dollars and get your choice of an appetizer, 2 entrees and a desert.

Yummy.

Here we go.

Appetizers include chips and chili cheese queso, Fried onion straws and jalapenos rings. Homemade ranch. Call me a glutton, I don’t care……… It was good.

Well……….. the entrée……….. half a rack of ribs with fries, chicken fried steak with corn on the cob and mashed potatoes. Me and mom.

Jim and Grandma had quesidillas, and the grilled chicken salad. What we would no as lightweights, give me liberty or give me meat. Jim had lunch prior to this in his defense. So here we go again.

“How is everything?”

“Awesome!”

“What would you like for desert?”

“Huh”

“Well for 20 dollars you get desert to.”

OK. Chocolate volcano cake with ice cream……… and white chocolate volcano cake with ice cream. You dig?

I was ready to dig a grave already but here we go.

Fat and full like you would not believe we headed out to our next venture for my Grandmother………. Sam’s.

She wanted to pick up a good load of Activia to keep things regulated. I am sure some of you know what I am talking about. However at this time of year……. It’s not so easy.

Sam’s promotes the holiday season like Mohammed Ali would promote a fight against George Foreman. You got nothing! Here! Try this!

Now I’m sampling their punches.

Left Meatball! Right Snack mix! Left shrimp! Right Punkin cheesecake…………. Eww he’s hurt. No I was ropin a dope. Gimme that pork tenderloin, yeah!

I didn’t stop……………. Tonight I was the champ. It did get worse but I will spare you the rest of the gory details.

All in all it was a good day, but I am hurting now. I would call the paramedics but I don’t think it would do any good. Hoora Semperfi.

Just can’t reason with the holiday season.

This may be an odd question, and a lot of you probably don't know what I'm talking about (not really sure how I even know...) After 1900, one of the only structures on the beach that was still (sort of) standing was Lucas Terrace, an apartment complex. I was wondering if any of you might know where that was, if there's anything standing there now, and if there is, whether or not there's a historical marker for it.

Too all i cant beleive it has already been a year since Hurricane Ike hit us!! It just seemed to be another normal week.. Then within a night all of our lives were twisted around..

I will say from that experience that it made me a stronger person.. Like everyone else I wonderred what life was gonna be like.. Was I gonna be able to come back to my beloved island??

I sit here now and am able to write this cause the emotion is hitting me!! Its mixed emotions on how I should feel.. I know i'm happy to be in the high life again 110%..

Eventhough alot of us didn't know each other there was a unity that came upon us itt was such a wonderful site.. It makes me proud to stand on top of the JUSTINE BUILDING and SAY I'M A GALVESTONIAN!!

I believe in miracles. I have a pad in the Justine Apartments. Yesterday morning Mojo asked me what I was doing downtown.

"Looking for a place to live."

She took me to Bob's Grocery, introduced me to Bob, who is now officially my landlord. The apartment is wonderful. A great place to create. Downtown. A real community. I haven't moved yet and I'm already a local.

Galveston History...

A small piece of Galveston history was lost today!! On 21st between Winnie & Church was an old building that they are saying was over 100 years old!!

It might not mean alot too most people but for me and my family it was were our buisness was till Ike..

Thank God we were able to move on and reopen it will always be in my heart!!

Not only was our shop in there from 1992-2008.. My Dad went too school there after HURRICANE CARLA.. ST. Marys's school had to be rebuilt.. Him and all his class mates had to go upstairs in that building..

Just thought alot of the Galvestonians etc.. might like to know that..

I was forced at gunpoint to attend this informative, life changing, history making event today. When some man who was addressing the council (and on TV, no less), pulled a rabbit out of his hat (yes, literally), I was hooked. I've erected a tent outside City Hall and will never again miss one of these meetings. Thank you Melanie, for opening my eyes to all I've been missing these past years. My life will never again be the same.

Go Green! City to Resume Recycling Plastic and Cardboard

The City of Galveston’s Recycling Center will begin accepting plastic and cardboard on Monday, August 31st.

Good news for all Galvestonians trying to go green. The City of Galveston’s Recycling Center will begin accepting plastic and cardboard on Monday, August 31st. Last September Hurricane Ike swamped the City’s mechanical bailers which are used to compact and package the recyclables. Over the last 11 months Galveston officials worked with FEMA to fund and replace the damaged equipment. Staff spent the week installing and testing the machinery before making a public announcement. In related news, the State of Texas Alliance for Recycling’s (STAR) 12th Annual Texas Recycling & Sustainability Summit will kick off in Galveston on Sunday, August 30th. The conference draws industry personnel from across Texas to discuss trends and technology in recycling. Summit organizers will donate a portion of the conference’s proceeds to the City of Galveston Recycling Center to assist with Hurricane Ike-related repairs. For more information visit STAR’s website, www.recyclingstar.org. The City of Galveston’s Recycling Center is located at 702 61st Street. The facility is open to the public Monday through Saturday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. The center will be closed over the Labor Day holiday weekend. For more information, please call (409) 741-1446.

Want to move to Galveston ASAP

Hi. Don't know if ya'll remember me from last year, but I still want to move down to Galveston. I currently live in McKinney, TX which is close to Dallas. I was wondering if I could get some locals to give me information on where the good and bad parts of town are. I have a small child, a little boy, who is 3 years old and I want him to grow up on the island and be safe. I am sure the crime cannot be any worse than Dallas but I would like to find a house to rent with a yard. We want to get a dog for him.

Anyway I have over 15 years experience in Accounting and just as many years with a variety of office experience, ie Receptionist, Customer Service, A/R, A/P, Payroll. So I am sure that I will be able to find a job down there soon. Right now I am trying to save my money for the cross state trip. It should take about 5 or 6 hours to drive down there with a moving truck.

So please locals if you could help me out? I know everyone on the forum is soooooo nice and helpful and I can't wait to meet everyone. Nothing is keeping me from moving down there this time!!! Yes Hurricane Ike scared the crap out of me and I kept my butt up here for a year, but I miss Galveston soooo much and it feels like home when I am there. So that is why I am making Galveston home ASAP.

And if anyone knows of any good daycares or private people to watch my son so I can work any info would be greatly appreciated!

I'm very happy to join up....now maybe I will get some feedback here on this...

Galveston is coming along fine from my last visit a couple of weeks ago. I was on the strand and saw the spray painter who makes amazing paintings for sale. He’s outstanding!

I had the opportunity to speak momentarily with him and he said that he requires a vendor’s permit and insurance to do what he does. I also saw a guitar and violin player as well. I asked one of them if they require a permit to perform in the park and they said no. However, I stopped and asked a rent-a-cop (security guard) if a permit is required and he said “YES” for all performers. Just then, a Galveston police car drove by the performers and even waved to one of them. Well that got me thinking of doing my research paper on street vendors / performers.

Upon further investigation, I found a memo from Steve LeBlanc, City Manager, regarding this. It can be found here:

It says that people are either artists or street performers. The gentleman who paints is an artist who requires a permit as he sells his wares to people. However the guitar player is a street performer and therefore is not required to have a permit as there are no tangible goods received by the public from the performer.

My question is, does anyone know if that permit is now required for street performers now since the 2007 memo? Also too, how much is a permit in Galveston? I’ve found some real characters out in Galveston. Most have lots to offer in the way of talent.

What are your experiences as well with the vendors / performers?
