  • Romantic Galveston?
    09-02-2008 9:18 PM

Hey I'm new to the Houston area so I dont really know much. I would like to take my girlfriend to Galveston this Saturday for her birthday; maybe for a nice dinner and a sunset on the beach or something. We havent really been around the Galveston area before. I was hoping I could get some recommendations for resturaunts, places to go, activites for us to do during the day while we're there. Thanks everyone.

     R.J. --

Welcome to the area!  Where are you from originally?

Just a couple of suggestions based on your hopes -- sunsets are absolutely beautiful at Waterman's on the West End.  Better phone in advance because I am now sure of their hours.

For an upscale treat in downtown, try Rudy and Paco's service with a flourish!!  It's on the corner of 21st and Postoffice Streets.  Across the street in the middle of the block is Saltwater Grill for some of the best kettle cooking soups and gumbos.  Try their Asparagus/crab appetizer too!!

Another downtown favorite of my groups is Fisherman's Wharf.   Not as upscale or pricey, their view of the harbor is fantastic, food good and service friendly.

Remember:  Galveston Island -- Because Life is just too short to live in Houston!  (so reads a popular bumper sticker . . .)

     Good choices GIG !

there are two places I like to go in the evening , before dinner  . Capt. Jacks Tiki Bar , right on Seawall blvd. and I'm gonna guess 19th st. also Murdochs Pier on Seawall @ 23rd great place to sit back and chilax.

Almost forgot , this Saturday is movies on the Strand , this week they are featuring Casablanca. bring a beach chair , bottle of wine , some cheese & grapes.... works for me... but then again I am easy.

I would think that one of the most romantic things to do would be to take a carriage ride.  I would have liked to when we visited last October, but there didn't seem to be enough hours in the day.........plus the hubby is not the most romantic one around.......shhhhh, don't tell him Wink.

If it was easy, anyone could do it.

Strand Ave is close to the bayside , 21st - 25th streets are hopping with cool stores. The Curiosity Shoppe is one of my fav.'s. also there is a candy store that makes great fudge.... walk around , check it out. She'll love it!

Small West Texas town huh?  Not "Tuna, TX"???  Have you seen that series of plays?  "Tuna Does Vegas" was just here all during the month of August.

"Casablanca" will be shown at SaengerFest Park on The Strand tonight.  Tomorrow is Art in the Park all day.

OH, and don't forget walking hand in hand on the Seawall . . . .

Ha, I havent seen "Tuna Does Vegas"; sounds very interesting though.  Art in the park sounds really nice;  we're both into the art scene. Do they  show films on Saturday night?

I love to take an evening stroll in the East End's tree-lined streets.  It is a journey back in time.

Welcome to Houston and the forum, RJ. You will find plenty to please your gal on the Island. A carriage ride is a great idea, thanks to NMLady. Also, a harbor tour is nice, too. Especially watching the dolphin..all wemmen love them.  Smile Let us know where you went.

You are unique just like everyone else. Hmm

Hey everybody thanx for all of the suggestions. Our day In Galveston was great! We didn’t get there until about 3pm, but we made the most of everything. We started everything off by going to “art in the park”.  There wasn’t much to look at, but it was nice.  We really enjoyed the art exhibit on the strand. I forgot what the shop was called, but it was wonderful. We were there for a long time. We’re both really big art lovers. After that we shopped around on the strand for a while and just goofed around and took some pics. We then ate dinner at Fisherman’s Warf.  After dinner we went to the beach and laid out a blanket and snacked on fruit/dip and I surprised her with a mini birthday cake. Then I played acoustic guitar and sang as we watched the sunset and waited for the stars.  We chilled a while and ended up going to “movie on the strand” and caught the last half of the film. Overall, she had an amazing time. She tells all of her friends and thanx me constantly.  SmileSo…Thanks to all of you!
