My husband and I are planning on camping in a tent for the first time in galveston May 7th 2009.  We are trying to find a place to stay that is safe. Would like to be as close to the water as possible. Are there any places that have showers? Any info would be apreciated.

Galveston Island State Park was hit pretty hard by Ike. I believe the bay side has reopened, but I am not sure about the overnight facilitiies. I don't recall any other camp grounds near the city.

Everything that happens will happen today.

Did you find a place to camp and shower?  How did it go?  I am looking to do the same.

    Hi,

If you are looking to camp in Galveston I like to go to the West end. Towards west beach. If you come into Galveston on 45s exit 61st st. Then turn right towards the seawall. Once you get to the seawall turn right again. You will go all the way down. You will pass Galveston state park.. You will think you are going no where. But keep going. You will come to a small toll bridge. Just before you get to th bridge break off to your left. Then follow the road down and you will come out onto the beach. I tent camp here often. Once you get onto the beach if you go to the right it curves around under the bridge, to your left it just goes on forever. Other then the occassional person doing donut in the sand this is a pretty cool place. Your right on the water and plenty of room so cars will not be driving close to you. But when it gets dark outside its dark. There are no light whatso ever so bring lanterns and lights. The only bad thing is that there are no showers, or bathrooms. Any way hope this helps.  My family and I will be going out there this weekend from Fri May 22, 2009 until Monday.

We passed this area last weekend on a tip from a local, then ended up spending the day on the beautiful (fairly secluded)beach across the Toll Bridge. The blue/green water reached the beach, I thought I was in Florida. I've never seen Texas waters so pretty. We are a young retired couple full of life, that enjoys adventure. We have been looking for a "safe" place to camp near Galveston. Is it OK to have open fire/BBQ, etc? What is the official beach dress code? We have heard so many interpretations (including thongs ONLY being the requirement). I would love to get an official interpretation. Where can we find the "official" dress code? Tks

I am not sure if those ordinances would apply way out by the toll bridge, not sure if that is consider city limits or not.  As far as wearing a thong, I would know nothing about that.  You might want to ask Old Dawg, I have read on this forum on numerous occassions that he wears a thong.  Hope this helps.
