I'm here........I usually check on the forum every weekday morning to see what is going on.  Unfortunatly, lately, I don't see too much that needs my input.

The hubby did finally build my greenhouse.........now I'm looking for cool weather to start using it.  We are actually getting a little bit of rain today as well.  The monsoons have pretty much skipped us lately.

If it was easy, anyone could do it.

I understand, NMLady, and I often follow that same philosophy, but you know, if we all just log on and lurk a bit and then log off, we just kinda add more sand to the fire.  If nobody says anything in a forum, then it ain't a forum no more, and if you see that nobody is saying anything, you don't say anything either, and then............

I would hate to see the tribe drift apart due to lack of interest.

And, I will confess that I'm guilty as charged too.  I'm working on sumpn' interesting to say, even as we speak.

I'll get back to you on that.  Geeked

Hey, Dixie.....the greenhouse is small, only 10' x 10'.  We have a dwarf orange and lemon tree that need a place to stay during the cooler weather....they are in containers.  I also plan to grow bell peppers, cherry tomatoes, stuff like that in container gardens inside the greenhouse.  I also plan to grow flowers for flower pots and start plants to put in the garden which is right by the greenhouse.  The greenhouse was actually supposed to be built a year ago, but nagging the hubby gets me no where.  Patience is the key here.

As for the pecan trees, we irrigate for the last time hopefully this next week end.  The water is short so they are shutting it off early.  We have become a victim to the August drop where a lot of the nuts fall off the tree for various reasons.  Otherwise, the trees look very healthy and we hope for a good crop.

Also, Old Dawg, I understand where you are coming from, but it is getting harder and harder to have input on some stuff regarding Galveston since it is coming up on 2 years since my visit and the distance involved makes it hard to comment on day to day stuff.  I'm not sure when or if I will be coming back that way.  It also breaks my heart that the Flagship might be coming down pretty soon.  It was such a fun place to stay.  Speaking of the Flagship........I guess some of the rooms are exposed to the elements if the glass doors got broken unless they boarded them up.  So so sad.  I guess it will be interesting to see what they do when it comes down........like what are they going to do with the pier unless they remove that too.  Any ideas?

If it was easy, anyone could do it.

Hi, NMLady.  Great to hear from you again.  I do understand what you mean about being so far removed from the island in both time and distance, but we still like to hear your input about anything that comes to your mind.  You have what is to most of us, a sort of unique home environment that is pretty far removed from what we are accustomed to here, so it's always interesting to hear about your day to day life out there.

As for the Flagship, you're right, it's pretty sad that it has come to this end.  I think Tillman Fertitta has plans to build a kind of an entertainment complex there, although he would probably have preferred to build a casino I'm guessing.  And as for the pier, I'm pretty sure it won't be removed, since it's been there a lot longer than even the Flagship. You know the old pier has seen more than one of it's occupants wiped out by hurricanes, the Flagship only being the latest, so it will be interesting to see what replaces the old hotel.  Sad, but life does go on, I guess.

    Anyway.....don't be a stranger, okay?

Oh good. I can access the forum from work this year.

Dawg, I did not know that was the Pleasure Pier! I kept wondering where in the heck it was. You can get tide readings for PP and I just wasn't sure of its location. See, you educated some of us.

NM Lady, it is wonderful to get the scoop from your neck of the woods. What do you do now about the pecans drop? And wat prevents that from happening? Our young pecan tree does it every year.

Hey, Lynnie.........unfortunately, as far as I know there is nothing to prevent the trees from shedding nuts.  It is mother natures way of protecting the trees.  Survival of the fittest.  Some years it is lack of water that the trees shed what they can't support.  On good years with plenty of water, the clusters of nuts crowd each other and the stronger ones win if you get my drift.  Some trees are affected worse than others, but as far as I know, there is nothing that can be done to prevent it OR can be done with the nuts that fall.  I have picked up some of the green ones to look and they are green and spongy, totally unedible.  So, you have a tree or two also.........we have 45 good sized ones and 20 that were planted about 8 years ago, so they are still young but growing.  We also have a pear, peach, nectarine and plum tree.  I learned how to make plum jam this summer......it turned out pretty good even if I do say so myself.

If it was easy, anyone could do it.

Dang, you are a quick reader, Ms. Sunshine! I looked at all of that wordy post right after I made it, and went back and edited out all the verbosity about the Pleasure Pier and all the other stuff about the history of that pier, not five minutes after I had posted it! I'm trying hard not to be so danged wordy, but ain't being very successful.  Anyway, that's what it was called back before the hotel was built on it, so I guess that's still what they are referring to with the tide readings.  I'm relying on a memory that's getting really kinda full of leaks and holes these days, so you might should research it before claiming to have been educated by my ramblings. Anyway, it sure is good to see you posting again.  Raises my spirits considerably to see all of y'all showing up again.  Yes

Interesting picture.  It surely must have been taken before my first sight of it, because it wasn't quite so elaborate the first time I ever laid eyes on it, to my best recollection.  Of course, my first sight of it was fifty-nine years ago this month, so my best recollection ain't too good at this point.

Interesting article, too.  Can't say I knew all of that stuff about it the way the old pier has evolved over all these years.

    Thanks for the links, lurker.

Landry's has said they would be starting demolition before the year end, if I remember right.  I don't recall that they gave an exact date, or many other specifics, other than that they planned to build some kind of entertainment complex.  I remember Fertitta had published a concept for replacing the Flagship even before the storm, and I think that some version of that is what we might expect to see one of these days.  Unless he finds a buyer for the peir, and then it could turn out to be anything.

One day we may look back and realize that Ike did the island one favor at least in hastening the demise of the Flagship, which was gradually rotting away before our eyes anyway, and replacing it with something new and shiny that will be a good tourist draw again.

It's so sad seeing it in its current condition.  I remember when it was just called "The pleasure pier".  We used to live at 25th and P1/2 and would walk there from home.  It'so sad, but it's time for it to go.  I agree with Old Dawg.  Something new and shiny would really be good.

Daniel Yeh, head of The Flagship Hotel Ltd. owns the hotel or has to keep the lease or something until the end of this year.... the way I understand it Landry's bought it out but Yeh had/has some hold on the peoperty until 2031 or some year around then, but with the hurricane IKE and Yeh keeping improper amounts of insurance and the lawsuit with FEMA fraud from Katrina I believe Landry's can take it down come December 31st, or at least that's my understanding from the several articles I have dug up

    Hello, all -

I have been thinking about the Flagship a lot this month.  At the beginning of the summer, someone on the forum posted that they were going to start demolition the middle of August.  Apparently, that hasn't happened yet.

I understand that Fertitta may not do anything with it until the end of the year because he doesn't want to pay the taxes on a storm-damaged building and he would have to in order to do anything with the location until then, and at last report Yeh was incarcerated so he won't be an obstacle anymore in moving ahead with any plans Fertitta may have.

I did hear that Fertitta was in negotiation at the first of the summer with a potential buyer.  Sounds like that didn't go through maybe.

I found this almost recent article that everyone might be interested in:  http://galvestondailynews.com/story.lasso?ewcd=64ee986dcc6180f6 .  It was written by the same author as the article Lurker posted.

It sort of sounds like people are wanting this refurbished "pleasure pier" to be what they were hoping the casinos could have done before they got voted down this last time.  Again, the Flagship is doing no one any good as it stands now so let's move forward.

I still think they should send in crews of intrepid individuals who would cart out what is in good shape and have a giant garage sale out on the seawall.  I think they would make lots of money, if everything hasn't been ruined after a year of exposure to the elements.  I personally would like some of the oval shaped mirrors that were in like every room between the bathroom and the rest of the room and maybe one of the rectangular iron tables with the glasstops that stood under the mirror.  (If you're gonna dream, dream big.)  There was a giant pedestal table with a glasstop that used to be in the lobby that I haven't seen in a few years so it may already be broken.  Any of the t-shirts/sweatshirts would make great souvenirs.  I suppose the grand piano on the first floor is damaged beyond repair.   It was so beautiful.

Loved the postcard, Lurker.  Was that the real thing there or an artist rendition of the plans?  What year was that supposed to be?

Keep us posted if you see any Flagship activities.

No day is so bad it can't be fixed with a nap Smile
