Smoking ban could be changed or put to voters

GALVESTON — Island voters may get a chance to decide during the May election where smoking should be allowed.

Dissatisfied with the smoking ordinance they adopted earlier this year, city council members voted unanimously to consider four options for changing it.

The ordinance, which takes effect Jan. 1, bans smoking in restaurants, bars, outdoor seating areas, tobacco stores and private clubs.

During their Dec. 3 meeting, council members will talk about amending it to allow smoking in tobacco stores and bars. They also will consider either rescinding it permanently or rescinding it and putting it on the May ballot.

Complaints from business owners, including the bar and restaurant owners who initially supported the ban, prompted the council to reconsider the changes.

The ordinance as adopted is one of the strictest in the state. But as it was proposed, the ordinance was more consistent with regulations in other cities, allowing smoking in outdoor seating areas and tobacco stores.

The Galveston Restaurant Association supported the proposed ordinance but said the adopted regulations were too strict. Most restaurant owners wanted to allow smoking in outdoor seating areas.

Councilman Tarris Woods, who insisted the ban extend to tobacco stores when the ordinance was adopted, said on Thursday he had changed his mind after talking to downtown business owners.

“That’s the reason why I’m trying to redeem that particular position I took regarding the tobacco shop,” he said.

Mayor pro tem Danny Weber, who opposed the ban when the council adopted it, suggested it should be rescinded.

“Businesses don’t like what we did, and those are the folks we should be listening to,” he said. “Everybody makes mistakes. It looks like we made a mistake with the ordinance we adopted.”

If the council couldn’t agree to abandon the ordinance, it should consider allowing smoking in bars, Weber said.

Councilwoman Linda Colbert, who did not attend the meeting during which the council adopted the ordinance, suggested smoking in bars would be fine, until she learned it is not illegal to take a child into a bar in Texas.

“That makes it difficult,” she said.

Both council members Elizabeth Beeton and Karen Mahoney said they did not want to change the ordinance.

“I think it could be workable,” Beeton said. “I know it would take some getting used to, but it’s fair. There’s a lot to commend in this ordinance.”

Mahoney suggested the council should let the voters decide.

After discussing changes on Dec. 3, the council will make its final decision Dec. 10.

OK, here it is. I had an opportunity to hang out with my mom, her boyfriend and the Saint of all Saints my Grandmother. Grandma says let’s go to Chili’s. They have a little special going on where you spend 20 dollars and get your choice of an appetizer, 2 entrees and a desert.

Yummy.

Here we go.

Appetizers include chips and chili cheese queso, Fried onion straws and jalapenos rings. Homemade ranch. Call me a glutton, I don’t care……… It was good.

Well……….. the entrée……….. half a rack of ribs with fries, chicken fried steak with corn on the cob and mashed potatoes. Me and mom.

Jim and Grandma had quesidillas, and the grilled chicken salad. What we would no as lightweights, give me liberty or give me meat. Jim had lunch prior to this in his defense. So here we go again.

“How is everything?”

“Awesome!”

“What would you like for desert?”

“Huh”

“Well for 20 dollars you get desert to.”

OK. Chocolate volcano cake with ice cream……… and white chocolate volcano cake with ice cream. You dig?

I was ready to dig a grave already but here we go.

Fat and full like you would not believe we headed out to our next venture for my Grandmother………. Sam’s.

She wanted to pick up a good load of Activia to keep things regulated. I am sure some of you know what I am talking about. However at this time of year……. It’s not so easy.

Sam’s promotes the holiday season like Mohammed Ali would promote a fight against George Foreman. You got nothing! Here! Try this!

Now I’m sampling their punches.

Left Meatball! Right Snack mix! Left shrimp! Right Punkin cheesecake…………. Eww he’s hurt. No I was ropin a dope. Gimme that pork tenderloin, yeah!

I didn’t stop……………. Tonight I was the champ. It did get worse but I will spare you the rest of the gory details.

All in all it was a good day, but I am hurting now. I would call the paramedics but I don’t think it would do any good. Hoora Semperfi.

Just can’t reason with the holiday season.

hi everyone,

Im not a tourism but neither am I a well local but rather a regular beach goer. (I live about an hour & 25 mins away from the beach)

My friends & family go down to the beach on a regular summer day trip each yr.

We all go to the Galveston Island State Beach Park. Is it possible to find sea glass at this beach??? & what are some good tips on finding sea glass??? Has anyone found seaglass on this beach??

Well.... I've been extremely busy of late so I delayed joining to put myself in "Forum Rehab" for a time. Thought it would be a good time to do it with the switch and all. I still have a ton of things to get done. I've got to re-write some programs at work, I've been contacted for some webmastering duties from two clients, I've got some muzak projects that have been sitting on the back-burner that need attention. However, I've managed to shoot a bunch of stuff at Shangri La in Orange, TX. I also finally got a few selectd photos together for Volume I of a "coffee table" like book to be printed at lulu.com, something I have been meaning to do for awhile now. Still need to get next volumes together.... and.... and.... and.....

has anyone else noticed the hummingbirds perching in their yards? Old dawg and I both have had a few of them. also ,last week i noticed a bunch of either ok looking butterflies , or beautiful moths thats were washing up in the shoreline. are they migraters?

Free Movies in the Park

They have reopened and I was there on Tuesday. Although it took an hour to get our food, it was soooooooo amazing! The restaurant was somewhat busy, but there was still open seats so I'm chalking up the hour that it took to make two sandwiches to some reopening glitches as they were very quick before the hurricane.

I can't wait to go back!
