Tossing Mullets at East Beach

First let’s establish what the Galveston Island Mullet Toss is not. It is not the hairstyle...nor do you have to grow one or wear one to be a part of the competition, but it could be more fun if you do. Nor are any animals harmed in this competition. The Galveston Island Mullet Toss is a fish throwing contest, a fundraiser and a party on the beach. At noon on Saturday July 26 at East Beach, the Galveston Island Convention and Visitors Bureau is teaming up with radio station 93Q Country and Hooters to host a unique new sport.

It is pretty simple and lots of fun. From a ten foot circle competitors must find the most effective manner to hurl a mullet. He who tosses the farthest wins! Hooters girls from around the area will measure how far you were able to throw that mullet. The score of the best out of two throws will be recorded. Leaders of the five participating categories aged 21 and up will continue on to the finals. The party will keep going between tossing rounds with fantastic live entertainment, food, drinks and a homemade bikini contest! The Grand Mullet Band will continue the themed event with great '80s classics at the award ceremony and after party will take place at Hooters on the Seawall at 7p.m.

The $10 entry fee to participate and other proceeds will be donated to the Snowdrop Foundation, a non profit organization that assists families and patients through the difficulties of surviving cancer at the Texas Children’s Hospital. The foundation is named after the snowdrop flower that blooms in the spring up through the snow. It is a hearty flower that is nearly indestructible by nature, such as the pediatric patient’s attitudes and spirits while battling cancer. The Snowdrop Foundation also helps to fund research to eliminate cancer and scholarships for college bound patients and survivors.

So get your throwing arm ready to be a part of a fun way to help child cancer patients. You might need to practice a little first too... how many other times have you chunked a fish before? It might be trickier than it seems.

Register for the Galveston Island Mullet Toss by completing the entry form online at www.galveston.com or www.thenew93q.com and mail entries to Galveston Park Board of Trustees, 2502 Church St, Galveston Tx, 77550. Entries after July 21, 2008 can be submitted in person at the Park Board office or at the event before noon.
