Promotion for AIA Sandcastle – a mini sandcastle competition on channel 11’s Great Day Houston. Setting: Three professionals assisting two audience members compete in building the best sand castle to win a VIP package to Galveston

.6:30 am: Bryan left Galveston hauling a truck full of sand to put in an unknown place on the Great Day Houston set.

8:00 am: Arrived to Great Day Houston after fighting Houston traffic (appreciative that he is an islander). Welcomed by producers directing the location of the sand to the middle of the       driveway of KHOU studios.

8:15 am:  Sand was piled outside the steps of the news studio where reporters and anchors alike were passing by.

8:20 am: Briefed Joe Powers, AIA representative, on segment topics and discussion questions. Such as the competition was listed as one of the 1001 Things You Should See Before You Die.

8:30 am: Mario Lopez AKA Slater from Saved by the Bell arrived to Great Day Houston set along side his dancing girlfriend Karinna Smirnoff to co-host the show and promote his new book.

8:35 am: Two audience members were chosen to participate and sent to make up. 

8:40 am: Drive way with sand piles was converted to fashionable set with plants, chairs, and tall tables displaying hip shoes and props pertaining to other segments on the show.

8:45 am: Sandcastle building professionals wet and stomp sand to begin the construction process.

8:50 am: Camera crews and producers scramble to make last minute changes before airing live at 9 am.

8:55 am: Participating audience members return from make up and kick off their shoes to get dirty in the sand.

8:58 am: Mics are on, cameras are focused and Dana Tyson and Mario take the stage.

9:00 am: Sandcastles are steadily being built waiting on a commercial break.

9:07 am: Commercial Break

Galveston Island is the best vacation getaway offering 32 miles of beautiful beach and plenty of family fun attractions.

9:14 am: “And we’re back with AIA Sandcastle Competition President, Joe Powers” Dana and Mario talk to Joe about the ins and outs of sandcastle building and the event in East Beach while sandcastle professional continue construction.

9:18-9:52 am: Great Day Houston show continues discussion about summer fashion, foot care, and a play at Theater Under the Stars, Drowsy Chaperone all while we hurry to complete sandcastle construction. We pray as the professional builders removed the forms that create the structure for the castles. Forms removed successfully we silently jump for joy. Participants helped to carve out the details of stairs, rocks, and bridges on the sandcastles.

9:53 am: Dana and Mario return to judge the castles and chose a winner. Mario flashed our Galveston folder with the VIP package for the participants to the camera. (YEA good promo) Audience members cheer for the castles and Dana gives details on Sandcastle Competition at East Beach on May 31.

10:01 am: Sandcastles are photographed and quickly destroyed for clean up.

10:05 - 11 am: We began sweeping and shoveling sand back into the truck to be sure the driveway of KHOU is spick and span. 

12:00 am: Arrived back to Galveston’s East Beach to return the sand and continue the usual workday.

A successful promotion of AIA Sandcastle Competition completed and now we await the rewards of guests at the event. Just another work day complete in the marketing department of the Galveston Island Convention and Visitors Bureau.
