Galveston’s historic Hotel Galvez, which sustained minimal damage from Hurricane Ike, is now scheduled to reopen to the public Wednesday, Oct. 15.

Here's a little history. The Hotel Galvez was built as a symbol of Galveston’s resilience following the Great Storm of 1900. A group of businessmen pulled their resources and raised $1 million to open the hotel on June 10, 1911 at 6 p.m. This elegant beachfront hotel was immediately proclaimed “Queen of the Gulf.”

Santa Monica was beautiful and, by the way, they had paid parking along the beachfront (which we need) allowing them to have great public bathrooms, lighting, etc. Pittsburgh was a delightful surprise with a great historic downtown area. While I love to travel, it is always great to come back over the causeway into Galveston. It's always a soothing homecoming and you instantly feel a little more relaxed. It's a reminder of why so many people choose to vacation or own second homes here. ...(read more)
