  • Ike Recovery, September 21, 2008, San Luis Resort

Roshell Gaskins with the Galveston Island Convention & Visitors Bureau sat down with Kristen Skille with the San Luis Resort & Conference Center.

As you can see in the video, the hotel is fully operational.

  • Ike Recovery, September 20, 2008, Caroline Dorsett

Caroline Dorsett is the Executive Director of the Galveston Island Humane Society.  She is truly one of Galveston's heroes,

I ran into her at the San Luis on Saturday and she invited me to stop by the temporary shelter that was setup for the Humane Society.  It was a moving experience.

Please watch and listen to what she had to say....

    Format: wmv
    Duration: 3:44

The temporary shelter is on 53rd & Ave S.

Donations can be made at the Galveston Island Humane Society's website:

Note:  Change the date to before the storm (i.e., Sep. 11).  The search appears to be based on the day the dog was rescued.

  • Ike Recovery, September 20, 2008, Dennis Byrd

I stopped by The Spot and talked to Dennis Byrd on Saturday, September 20.  People were on the deck relaxing and having a beer.  As the gas had been turned off, he was using the opportunity to give the restaurant a good cleaning.  The smell of Fabuloso kitchen cleaner was in air.

As with everyone I spoke to, Dennis was upbeat and confident the island would be rolling in no time.

On yeah, Ron Limbaugh, organizer of the bike rally, was there.  I think that is good news for the rally.

  • 93Q Mullet Toss

OK.  There are no words to describe this.  So, I sent fellow blogger, Bar Trash, to the beach with the camera.  He came back with this....

    Format: wmv
    Duration: 1:31

Proceeds from the Mullet Toss be donated to the Snowdrop Foundation, a nonprofit organization that assists families and patients of the Texas Children's Hospital through the difficulties of surviving cancer. The foundation is named after the snowdrop flower that blooms in the spring up through the snow. It is a hearty flower that is a nearly indestructible by nature, as is a cancer survivor's attitude and strength to win. The Snowdrop Foundation also helps to fund research to eliminate cancer and scholarships for college bound patients and survivors.

  • Galveston Thunderstorm rains on the Crunch 48 to 34

Did you know that Galveston has an arena football team?   In fact, they are in first place!

The Galveston Thunderstorm took the lead on Saturday, June 21, with a victory over the Kaufman County Crunch.

The Daily News ran a good article about the game.

The Galveston.com Videographer was on hand to capture some shots.  I’ve picked out a few.  Enjoy…

  • The New Video Blog

I've been promoted!  I have my own blog...

Actually, it was not that difficult to convince Jim Cordell, our Galveston.com Community moderator.  I got up the nerve, walked into his office, and asked.  He looked at me like I was an idiot and said, "Do whatever you want.  You own half the company.".

There you have it, Cheetah is out of the closet.  I am Lee Roane, the other owner of Galveston.com.

I've been posting video clips in the forum recently.  I'm not much of an editor, but I'm getting better.  We actually have a "real" video editor that does professional stuff on the Galveston.com Video Channel.  I'm trying to be a bit more timely and upload raw clips soon after they happen - nothing fancy.

Here are a few of the past postings:

    Juneteenth:  http://community.galveston.com/forums/t/478.aspx

    Lifesaving Association:  http://community.galveston.com/forums/t/467.aspx

    Grand Kids Festival:  http://community.galveston.com/forums/t/424.aspx

    Sandcastle Competition:  http://community.galveston.com/forums/t/423.aspx

I'm working on something else to post this afternoon.  Stay tuned....

    Thanks for watching.

But the best part?  Not only can you enjoy these videos on your own computer, but you can easily embed them on your own personal websites, or share them with your friends!

  • Galveston.com Named Finalist in 2008 American Business Awards

Galveston.com & Company was named a Finalist today in the "Website: Video & Film;" and "Video & Film: Tourism & Travel" categories in The 2008 American Business Awards. The company captured "Best Website Design" for Galveston.com in the 2006 awards ceremony, and "Best Interactive Multimedia: Public Information" for Second Life Galveston Island in the 2007 ceremony.

Hailed as "the business world's own Oscars" (New York Post , April 27, 2005), The American Business Awards are the only national, all-encompassing awards program honoring great performances in business.

Stevie Award winners will be announced during the annual gala on Thursday, June 12 at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in New York City. More than 600 executives from across the U.S.A. are expected to attend. The ceremonies will be broadcast on radio nationwide by the Business TalkRadio Network and hosted by Liz Claman of FOX Business Network.

More than 2,600 entries from companies of all sizes and in virtually every industry were submitted for consideration in more than 40 categories, including Best Overall Company, Best Executive, Best New Product or Service, Best Corporate Social Responsibility Program, and new categories including Best Management Team and Best Corporate Environmental Responsibility Program. Galveston.com & Company will be competing in the "Website: Video & Film" and "Video & Film: Tourism & Travel" categories for Advertising, Web Sites, Video & Other Media.

"All of us at Galveston.com & Company are thrilled to be honored with these two nominations," said Jim Cordell, Vice-President & Chief Creative Officer. "The Galveston.com Video Channel has truly revolutionized our tourism marketing efforts, and we greatly appreciate this recognition by such a reputable organization as The Stevies."

Members of the Awards' Board of Distinguished Judges & Advisors and their staffs will select Stevie Award winners from among Finalists in final judging during the week of May 19. Finalists were chosen by business professionals nationwide during preliminary judging in April through early May.

"ABA entries grew more than 30% this year, so being named a Finalist is more of an accomplishment than ever before," said Michael Gallagher, founder and president of The Stevie Awards. "It means that independent business executives have agreed that the nominee is worthy of national recognition. We congratulate all of the Finalists on their achievement and wish them well in the competition."

Details about The American Business Awards and the list of Finalists in all categories are available at www.stevieawards.com/aba
